Harvest Moon Festival - Whiteside Park - September 11-13, 2009

Fall in Ely - a great time of year!  To kick off the “beautiful leaf season” here in northern Minnesota, Ely has adopted a fall craft show - plus much more!  The resorts and restaurants are a little less busy than our high mid-summer season.  It’s a great time of year to visit the area to truly enjoy the beauty of the area.

It is one of our busiest times in real estate.  Many buyers would love to land in their new home, cabin, or parcel of land before the snow hits the ground.  Many sellers would love to sell prior to caring for the property through another winter.  Also, recreational opportunities are abundant right now with the fall hunting season fastly approaching.

Take advantage of this wonderful time of year to visit Ely!

Blueberry Art Festival in Ely!

July 21st, 2009

Ely’s busiest time of year - Blueberry Art Festival!  People flock from miles away to enjoy the craft show of the summer.  How does this affect our real estate business? Our clients tend to try & plan their vacations around the festival so they can look at properties and enjoy the purchasing opportunities in Whiteside Park.  As for our storefront we never have a free parking space available……I don’t think we’re alone on this one.  Most of the town is full of visitors and our parking areas are limited.  The Blueberry Art Festival is this weekend, July 24-26 in Whiteside Park right in the heart of town.

Happy Shopping!

Freeze Warning!

June 3rd, 2009

Last night we had a freeze warning in NE Minnesota.  I think mother nature forgot what month it is!?!?!?!? One of our agents had ice covering his bird bath.  Others had frost over their lawns.  I think all my annual flowers are still alive - I must be in a warm spot - or it could be just warmer in the city.

I guess we learn to accept the weather as it comes - that’s one thing we cannot control.  And who knows - we have had snow in July - ugh!

Fishing Opener - A Minnesota Holiday!

May 9th, 2009

Today is the official start to summer as we know it.  Fishing opener - when even the governor participates every year in this event.

Some people opt for starting their day at midnight, with a little night fishing. While others tend to be more practical and get up bright & early to get to their favorite fishing hole.  Most of my life has been spent out in a boat in the Boundary Water’s Canoe Area on opening day.  Many times, here in Ely, the weather does not cooperate with this big event.  It’s typically cold, windy, and even a snow flake or two tend to grace us with their presence. It’s the official unofficial start to summer here in the northwoods.

Good Luck & Happy Fishing!

Ely, MN - “Sled Dog Capitol of America”

February 25th, 2009

Events in Ely are very important to the well being of the community. Mark Crenshaw is on the board organizing a sled dog race here in Ely.

Sled Dog Race

Sled Dog Race

By Mark Crenshaw, LSIT, Bear Island Surveying, Inc.

During it’s heyday in the 1970’s the All American Sled Dog Race was the biggest race in the “lower 48″. This led Ely’s Mayor J.P. Grahek to proclaim the city the “Sled Dog Capitol of America.”

The race was held annually from 1970 to 1989. The final race attracted 160 mushers and gave out $15,000 in prize money.

Dog sled racing has returned to Ely! After a nearly 20 year hiatus dog sled racing has returned in the form of the WolfTrack Classic Sled Dog Race, which will hold it’s second running on March 1st, 2009.

The first 8-Dog team blasts off from the chutes at 8:30am sharp, followed by subsequent teams every two minutes. The 6-Dog race will begin soon after the last 8-Dog team has left. All teams make their way west, along the rough and rugged Taconite Trail towards the town of Tower. The 6-Dog racers will celebrate their finish at The Depot in downtown Tower. The City of Tower is only the half-way point for the 8-Dog teams. The race course loops the teams through downtown Tower and quickly reconnects them back onto the Taconite Trail for the exciting finish back at the Hidden Valley Ski Chalet in Ely.

Other events being held on race weekend include a Canine Weight Pull, Adventurer’s Gala, and the Musher’s Lasagna Feed. Check out the schedule of events and get details at http://www.wolftrackclassic.com

Winter Sunset - Grassy Lake near Ely

Winter Sunset - Grassy Lake near Ely

As I returned to Ely after vacation my world as I knew it changed in one swoop. Monday, February 9th, Coldwell Banker 1st Ely Realty announced that they were closing their doors. A big hit to the industry, community, and people involved. (For more, check out the article in the Ely Echo) As the week progressed rumors spread, agents spread, and through it all we are trying to conduct business as usual with our clients.

As the fog begins to settle we pick up the pieces and position ourselves in our new market conditions, competition, etc. Our message to the general public was and will continue to be that we continue to provide professional service to each of our customers for all your real estate needs in northeastern Minnesota.

Ely Winter Festival

February 4th, 2009
Snow Sculpture

Snow Sculpture

As we roll over another month, we are getting closer to spring. A time where Ely comes out of “cabin fever” and the town starts hopping. For now, though, we are in the midst of the Ely Winter Festival. The mukluk ball takes place on February 7th and the carving of the beautiful snow sculptures should be completed. For those of us braving the elements, it’s a great time to venture out in Ely. Temperatures are finally bearable, at least for the moment, and snow levels make it a great time to get out & enjoy!
